You ordered a blood test, the results arrived in your inbox, and now you're staring at a page full of abbreviations, numbers, and arrows. What does it all mean?

The Anatomy of a Lab Report
Most lab reports share the same basic structure:
- Test name: What was measured (e.g., "Glucose", "TSH", "LDL Cholesterol")
- Your result: The value measured in your sample
- Units: How the value is expressed (mg/dL, mIU/L, g/dL, etc.)
- Reference range: The normal range for healthy adults
- Flag: An H (high) or L (low) indicator when your result falls outside the reference range
That's it. Once you understand those five columns, you can read any standard lab report.
What Is a Reference Range?
A reference range is the range of values found in 95% of healthy adults. It's calculated by testing a large population of people with no known disease and finding where the middle 95% of results fall.
This means two important things:
- 5% of healthy people will have a result outside the reference range — a single flagged value doesn't automatically mean something is wrong
- Reference ranges are population averages — your personal normal may be slightly different based on age, sex, fitness level, and genetics
Reference ranges also vary by laboratory. Quest and LabCorp may use slightly different ranges for the same test, which is normal.
Understanding Common Flags
H — High
Your result is above the upper limit of the reference range. Depending on how far above and which test, this may be clinically significant or a minor variation.
L — Low
Your result is below the lower limit of the reference range. Same principle applies — context matters.
Critical Values
Some labs flag results as "critical" when values are so far outside normal that immediate medical attention may be needed. These are rare and will typically prompt a direct call from the lab.
Decoding the Most Common Tests
Glucose (Blood Sugar)
- Normal fasting: 70–99 mg/dL
- Prediabetes: 100–125 mg/dL
- Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher (on two separate tests)
Note: Glucose must be measured fasting (nothing to eat or drink except water for 8–12 hours) for accurate results.
Hemoglobin A1c
- Normal: Below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7–6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
Unlike fasting glucose, A1c does not require fasting and reflects your average blood sugar over 2–3 months.
Total Cholesterol
- Desirable: Less than 200 mg/dL
- Borderline high: 200–239 mg/dL
- High: 240 mg/dL or above
Total cholesterol alone doesn't tell the full story — the breakdown of LDL, HDL, and triglycerides matters more.
LDL Cholesterol ("Bad" Cholesterol)
- Optimal: Less than 100 mg/dL
- Near optimal: 100–129 mg/dL
- Borderline high: 130–159 mg/dL
- High: 160–189 mg/dL
- Very high: 190 mg/dL or above
HDL Cholesterol ("Good" Cholesterol)
- Low (risk factor): Less than 40 mg/dL (men), less than 50 mg/dL (women)
- Protective: 60 mg/dL or above
Higher HDL is better — it helps remove LDL from your arteries.
TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone)
- Normal: 0.4–4.0 mIU/L (ranges vary slightly by lab)
- High TSH: May indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Low TSH: May indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
Creatinine (Kidney Function)
- Normal (men): 0.74–1.35 mg/dL
- Normal (women): 0.59–1.04 mg/dL
Elevated creatinine can indicate reduced kidney function and warrants follow-up.
Why Fasting Matters for Some Tests
Certain tests require you to fast (no food or drink except water) for 8–12 hours before your blood draw. Eating beforehand can significantly affect:
- Glucose: A meal can temporarily raise blood sugar by 30–50 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: A fatty meal can raise levels for up to 12 hours
- LDL cholesterol: Calculated using triglycerides, so affected by eating
Tests that do not require fasting include CBC, TSH, A1c, and most STD panels.
When Should You Follow Up With a Doctor?
A single flagged result doesn't always require urgent action, but you should consider following up if:
- Multiple values are flagged in the same panel
- A value is significantly outside the reference range (not just borderline)
- You have symptoms that align with the abnormal result
- The same value has been trending in one direction over multiple tests
- You received a "critical" flag
For borderline results, retesting in 3–6 months is often the appropriate next step.
Trending Your Results Over Time
One of the most valuable things you can do with lab results is track them over time. A single cholesterol reading tells you where you are today. Three readings over two years tell you whether you're improving, stable, or declining — and whether lifestyle changes or treatment are working.
